OUR FOCUS
AMWA is dedicated to serving the greater Detroit community, with a focus on helping women and children in need.  This year we will be working with Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries and Detroit International Academy for Young Women.

Please check back soon for specific dates and times when we will be volunteering.

COMPELLING NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY
 - In Detroit, there are over 18,000 homeless people in need of shelter on any given night
 - 30% of them are chronically homeless; 25% of them are children
 - Over 13,000 people live on the streets each night in abandoned buildings or "doubled up" with family or friends
 - Over 10,000 families in Wayne County will become homeless at least once during the next year

Current Outreach Efforts

DETROIT RESCUE MISSION MINISTRIES (DRMM)
DRMM offers emergency shelter, clothing, and meals for homeless men, women, and children in the Detroit community.  This year, AMWA will be working with Genesis House I (a division of DRMM) that provides transitional housing to teen mothers with children.  We will be mentoring young women and working in the  soup kitchen.

DETROIT INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY FOR YOUNG WOMEN
Detroit International Academy is the only all girls' K-12 public school in Michigan. It offers a college preparatory curriculum, with an emphasis on mathematics, science, technology, and leadership development.  This year AMWA will be offering after school tutoring and monthly presentations on health-related topics.
